It is important that you approach your finances in an organized manner, as this can help you to keep a track of all of you incomings and outgoings and will help to prevent you from missing any repayments on your credit products, or going over drawn on your bank accounts. Mismanagement of credit cards, loans and mortgages can have a disastrous impact on your finances and good credit name, and could leave you with serious debts that can be very difficult to resolve.

Wages and Outgoings
You should try and avoid spending more than you earn, as this can soon leave you with heavy debts, and once you have entered the debt cycle it can be hard to break free. Set up a household accounting spreadsheet, either on your computer or in hardcopy and make sure you write down exactly what you earn each month and what you spend each month, which should include items such as utility bills, rent/mortgage, groceries, vehicle and fuels costs, leisure time, clothes and any luxury goods (DVDs, magazines, etc). Add up your incomings and outgoings and make sure they match up, and if you discover you are living outside of your means then look at your spreadsheet and see if there are any areas you can cut back on. Always make sure you budget enough money for all of your bills and repayments first, and look to the food, luxury items and clothing sections for cutbacks.

Credit Cards
You may need to rethink your attitude to your credit cards. Credit Cards are debts, and every time you use one you are borrowing money, so think very carefully about what you are using them for, and whether it is necessary or not. You should try and get out of the habit of using credit card for nights out or luxury items, as if you have to use your credit card to pay for these things then this usually means that at the moment you can’t actually afford them, and so you are just getting yourself into more debts by treating yourself. If you are using your credit card to buy food and essentials each month then your finances are most likely in a bit of a mess, and you may need to speak to a debt management specialist to help you sort out your money issues.

Most consumers will borrow money at some point in their adulthood, and debts such as mortgages, credit cards and bank account overdrafts are considered a necessary part of everyday, modern life. As long as you meet the agreed monthly minimum repayments on these debts then they will be considered ‘good’ debts, which show that you have are able to manage your finances and borrowing well, and this will actually improve your credit rating and make it much more likely for you to be accepted for competitive, low interest rate credit products in the future. However sometimes circumstances can get the better of you, and it can be too easy to borrow more than you can afford to manage, and this can result in missed repayments and penalties. If you miss repayments on your loans, mortgages and credit cards then they can quickly turn into ‘bad debts’, which will reflect negatively on your credit rating and this can indicate to lenders that you are a poor risk, and so you will be ineligible for competitive borrowing rates in the future.

There are a number of ways you can repair your credit if you do fall into a bad debt cycle, and the most important is to communicate with your lenders as soon as possible and work out a repayment plan early on that you can realistically manage. Lenders are usually willing to help those customers who are struggling to meet their commitments, but if you ignore the debt and let it build up then lenders will be less understanding, and by the time you get round to sorting it out they may no longer be in a position to offer you a revised repayment plan, and instead will insist the debt is repaid in full. You should also sit down and work out which of your debts are the most urgent and tackle these first, such as a mortgage as you could have your home repossessed if you do not keep up with these repayments.

Debt is an everyday part of modern life, but it important that you control your debts, and manage them well so that they work for you, rather than against you. Debts can actually be beneficial to consumers in many ways if they are ‘good debts’, (those that are paid off regularly), as the repayment schedule will show lenders that the consumer has a steady borrowing history, and that they are a good risk for new credit products. Lenders will not be looking for consumers who pay their debts in full very quickly, as they will have little chance of making a profit on the repayment interest, and will also be less likely to consider consumers who have a history of ‘bad debt’, which are basically those debts that have a record of consistently missed repayments.

It is important that you manage your debts well in order to keep on top of them and also so that you can maintain your good credit name, and if you find that you have fallen behind with repayments or mismanaged some of your credit then there are some simple steps you can take to repair this damage such as:
1.	Write up a full schedule of all of your repayments and make sure you pay at least the minimum amount from each on time every month. This may not get the debts paid off quickly, but it will avoid any penalties which can soon add up, and will also ensure your debts are managed well and your good credit name is repaired.
2.	Highlight all of your most important debts such as mortgages and secured loans, and make sure you treat these as a priority in your repayment schedule. You stand to lose a great deal if you cannot keep up with credit products such as mortgages, and your home could be repossessed if you fall too far behind so it is important that whatever happens you make sure you pay the minimum on these each month, every month.

A good credit rating is important as lenders, rental companies and utility companies will all check the credit of potential customers before deciding whether or not to agree to new accounts or offer credit services. If you have a bad credit rating you may not be eligible for many basic everyday activities such as renting a car or apartment, or even opening up new telephone accounts at your property.

The best way in which you can repair your credit is to make sure you pay off any outstanding debts that you have that are in arrears, and ensure you meet the minimum payments on all of your current credit products including any overdrafts, credit cards, loans or mortgages every month, in order to build yourself up a good, steady repayment history. This is what many lenders will be looking for when they check your credit history report, so although bad debts do remain on your report for 6 years, as long as you can show that you are now managing your current credit products well you should still be in with a good chance of success with any future credit applications.

You should also get a copy of your credit report for yourself, as this is a good way to make sure you are managing all of your credit products and debts well. Look out for any errors or suspicious activity on your report, as identity theft is growing increasingly common and criminals can steal enough personal information about their victims in order to apply fraudulently for credit in their names. Credit fraud is a serious crime so you should report any concerns you have about your credit history to the credit agencies as soon as possible, and this could also be adversely affecting your credit rating so it is important to get this sorted out quickly.

If you have had a credit application refused unexpectedly then this is an early warning sign that something could be seriously wrong on your credit report. Credit reports record the complete credit history of millions of consumers all around the world, and lenders will refer to this database before processing any applications for credit. If you have a poor credit rating due to debts such as missed monthly repayments on products including loans, mortgages and credit cards then lenders will consider you to be a high risk, and may be unwilling to accept you for the competitive low rate products, or extend any credit to you at all.

If you are not aware of any outstanding debts in your name, and you have never been refused credit before then it is very important that you check your credit report as soon as possible, as there could be a mistake recorded which has brought down your credit rating, or you could have become a victim of identity theft. This can occur when criminals steal enough personal information about you as an individual that they can actually impersonate you and apply for credit fraudulently in your name, and then they will literally take the money and run, leaving you to face any debts, charges and fees that have been incurred using your details. You can apply for one free copy of your credit report from the main credit reference agencies such as Experian and Equifax once a year, and you should use this to double check your credit history to ensure that all of the records are correct and that there has been no suspicious activity. If you do spot any errors or obvious tampering with your report then you must inform the credit reference agency immediately who will look into this further for you. If you do spot any suspicious activity on your credit report you should also carry out a check of all your bank accounts, credit statements and other financial records to ensure there have been no fraudulent charges elsewhere.

Your good credit name is an important asset, and lenders will check your credit rating before they consider you for any credit products such as new credit cards, loans, cell phone contracts and even utility accounts. Therefore it is important that you manage your debts successfully and maintain your good credit name, as once you have fallen into a bad debt cycle it can be very difficult to break free and repair your credit in the future.

Existing Debts
Make sure you pay off the minimum agreed amounts on all of your credit products each month, and you might want to set up some direct debits so that these are never forgotten. This will ensure you do not fall behind with any repayments, and then if you have any spare money and want to pay some more off your debt then you can do so in addition to the minimum payment. If you are struggling to repay even the minimum amount on your debts, then contact your lenders. They may be willing to adjust your repayment schedule, and some lenders can also offer repayment holidays, which can give you a break if you are going through a bad patch in your finances.

Applying for new Credit
If you have a large amount of debt and you are struggling to manage all of the separate repayments then it could be a good idea for you to consolidate your debt into one single loan, as this will be much easy to manage and plan for. Book an appointment in your bank and speak to a professional loan advisor before you sign up to any new credit products, so that you can discuss all of the options available to you, and shop around for the best interest rates and deals, both in the high street and also online.

Every time you sign up to a credit product such as a loan, credit card or bank account it will be recorded on your consumer credit report, and also the details of how you manage this product, including any payment arrears or outstanding debts will also be recorded. This means that if you have had a history of bad debts it will follow you into the future, making it difficult for you to apply for credit products when you need to.

It is very important that you take steps to repair your credit as soon as possible, as a good credit rating is a vital tool in modern life and can save you money on your borrowing by giving you access to the lower interest rate credit cards, loans and mortgages. If you are a bad debtor you could even be turned down for every day credit such as utilities and rental agreements and this can make things very awkward for you.

There are several very easy steps you can take to set you on the path to repairing your credit including:
1.	Order a copy of your consumer credit report and examine it carefully for any mistakes or errors that could be affected your credit report negatively. Also note down any debts or outstanding payments that need sorting out, and contact your lenders to seek further advice on how to settle these debts.

2.	If you have a county court judgement on your credit report make this your priority to sort out, as this is one of the most damaging marks against your good credit name. A CCJ cannot be removed until you have sorted out the debt and paid off the lender in full, within the deadlines specified, so never ignore any warnings related to CCJ’s that come through the mail.
